Race Name: THE SAN FRANCISCO MARATHON
Location: San Francisco, CA
I haven't actually left my heart anywhere but that was lululemon's phrase for the race :-)
This a unique event because there are 4 races to choose from. The FULL Marathon and FIRST HALF Marathon (first 13.1 miles of the course) start at 5:30am & the SECOND HALF Marathon (last 13.1 miles of the course) starts at 8:30am. I recommend the FULL to get the complete San Francisco experience on foot :-) ...the 4th race is the ULTRA, you run the full marathon course at midnight backwards (from the finish line to the start line)...and then you run the entire course again with everyone else at 5:30am.
I ran this race last year and loved it so much I signed up immediately for this year! Traveling at the end of the month is hard for me (work) - with that said I flew up to Oakland the night before the race. The BART (train) took me to San Francisco where I met friends for a quick dinner and to get my race bib (the race allows others to pick up your bib, very convenient). I immediately went to my hotel (Parc 55 by Hilton) got everything staged, got ready for bed and set my alarm for 4am!
We were blessed with perfect weather on race morning! Not too cold, not too warm... it's still dark at 5am so there is a special vibe in the city as thousands of runners flock to the start line area, gather and do their final prep for the race.
Is this a difficult race? I have to say yes - there are some killer hills, the second half seemed harder to me. Is the pain and effort worth it? HELL YES! I love running on the Golden Gate Bridge and so much of the course shows off how beautiful San Francisco is!

As much as I suffer on a full...as much as I regret it when I'm out there...there is an odd addiction to the challenge and pain. My friends are already asking me if I'm going to run again next year...chances are I will run the full again...see you next year TSFM!
